The Gen Z Revolution — September 2025

✊ The Uprising That Changed Everything
On September 8–9, 2025, Nepal's youth took to the streets in the largest protest movement the country had seen since the 2006 Jana Andolan. Students, young workers, and first-time voters demanded an end to entrenched corruption, nepotism, and the political duopoly of NC-UML. The protests were triggered by accumulated frustration: rising unemployment, inequality, the Pokhara airport scandal, and decades of unfulfilled promises. Buildings were set fire. Lives were lost. And on September 12, the Federal Parliament was dissolved.
Aug 2025
Social media campaigns begin targeting KP Oli government's mishandling of Pokhara Airport scandal and youth unemployment. TikTok videos mocking "uncle politics" go viral.
Sep 8–9
Mass protests erupt in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Biratnagar, Butwal. Young protesters clash with police. At least 77 people killed across two days of protests. Buildings — including government offices — set alight.
Sep 9
KP Sharma Oli government falls. Resignation announced amid mounting pressure from streets and within parliament. Oli calls protesters "anti-national forces."
Sep 12
President Ram Chandra Poudel dissolves Federal Parliament on recommendation of caretaker government. Former Supreme Court Chief Justice Sushila Karki appointed interim Prime Minister.
Dec 2025
Election Commission sets March 5, 2026 as election date. Parties scramble for new leadership — NC replaces Deuba with Gagan Thapa. Balen Shah joins RSP as PM candidate.
Jan 2026
3,484 candidates from 68 parties register. CIAA files Pokhara Airport case against Ram Sharan Mahat and others (Dec 2025). Rabi Lamichhane files via proxy due to court hearings.
Feb 16
Election code of conduct released. Campaign activities begin. 320,000 security personnel deployed. 11,901 polling booths registered — 4,614 classified "highly sensitive."
Mar 5, 2026
Election Day. 19 million voters decide: old guard revival, reform surge, or hung parliament?
Politicians Toppled or Affected by Gen Z Movement

Government fell Sep 9, 2025
PM whose government was directly ousted. Called protesters "nation-destroyers." Now running Jhapa-5 trying to return to power.
Ramesh Lekhak

NC Home Minister during Gen Z crackdown. Did not contest 2026 election — widely seen as consequence of role during protests where deaths occurred.
Sher Bahadur Deuba
NC President, denied ticket
Seven-time MP denied election ticket by his own party. Replaced by Gagan Thapa. Emblem of generational change sweeping old guard out.

Land Ceiling Violation
Historic first case against a PM for Cabinet decisions
Former PM Madhav Kumar Nepal allegedly facilitated Patanjali Yogpeeth (Baba Ramdev's company) exceeding Nepal's land ceiling limits while PM in 2010, then two months later allowed Patanjali to sell the same land for profit. PM personally tabled the Cabinet proposals — unusual direct PM involvement. CIAA argues this is not a "policy decision" protected by immunity as it benefited a single company.

Promise Tracker — 2022 vs Reality

The Most Common Unfulfilled Promises (2017–2022 cycle)
❌ Never Delivered
  • ✗ Road electrification for all villages
  • ✗ Hospital in every ward
  • ✗ 500,000 jobs per year
  • ✗ Industrial zones in every province
  • ✗ Earthquake reconstruction complete (2015)
  • ✗ India border disputes resolution
  • ✗ Anti-corruption institutional reform
◐ Partially Delivered
  • ◐ Rural electrification (89% reached)
  • ◐ Melamchi Water Supply (partial)
  • ◐ Federalism implementation
  • ◐ Local government empowerment
  • ◐ Tourism infrastructure
✓ Actually Delivered
  • ✓ Constitution promulgated (2015)
  • ✓ Federalism structure established
  • ✓ Local elections held (2017, 2022)
  • ✓ Some hydropower expansion
The Structural Problem: Nepal's political parties make identical promises every cycle. Roads, hospitals, jobs. The reason they're never delivered isn't always corruption alone — it's also institutional capacity, budget allocation politics, and the lack of a consequence mechanism. This platform exists to create that mechanism: if voters can see exactly what was promised and exactly what was delivered, the cycle can be broken.

The Real Questions Voters Are Asking
About Balen
  • ❓ Can a mayor run a country?
  • ❓ Will RSP's weak rural network hold?
  • ❓ Can he govern with Rabi Lamichhane as party chair?
  • ❓ His bulldozer style — will it work nationally?
  • ✊ Gen Z answer: "Give the new generation its turn"
About Oli
  • ❓ Will voters forgive the social media ban and 77 deaths?
  • ❓ Can he win Jhapa-5 against Balen on home turf?
  • ❓ Is "nation-builder vs destroyer" framing too divisive?
  • ❓ BRI deals — asset or liability with India-aligned voters?
  • ⚡ UML answer: "Experience matters. Only Oli has governed"
About Thapa
  • ❓ Can he win in Sarlahi — a place he has never represented?
  • ❓ Is NC's party split real or resolved?
  • ❓ Will Deuba loyalists undermine his campaign?
  • ❓ His apology video — genuine reform or political calculation?
  • 🌿 NC answer: "Right mix of energy and experience"
Post-Election Scenarios
Scenario A — RSP Surge
RSP wins 50–80 seats. Balen as PM. Needs coalition partners. Likely: NC support from outside. Risk: Rabi Lamichhane's fraud case. India watches warily — Balen's "Greater Nepal" map stance.
Scenario B — UML Holds
UML wins 70–90 seats. Oli returns as PM despite Gen Z backlash. Rural base proves decisive. Coalition with RPP and NCP. China pleased, India concerned.
Scenario C — NC Centrist Win
NC wins 75–95 seats. Gagan Thapa as PM. Coalition with RSP or smaller parties. Reform-oriented but stable. India comfortable. Strong on health and social policy.
Scenario D — Hung Parliament
Most likely. No party wins majority. Weeks of coalition negotiations. Risk of instability returning. Nepal's 12th PM in 20 years. Sushila Karki may need to stay longer.
